MLK Day at TMA

Monday, January 15, 2024 | 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) invites the community to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 15 with a dance party, art activities, a panel discussion and more. Typically closed on Mondays, TMA will open from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. to honor King’s legacy. General admission to the Museum is always free, and parking will be free also.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

11 a.m.-4 p.m. | Silent Hip Hop Dance Party | Libbey Court
Put on a pair of Urban Fetes interactive headphones and join our silent dance party. Listen to family friendly hip hop music and Martin Luther King Jr.’s powerful “I Have a Dream” speech.

11 a.m.-4 p.m. | Collectible Digital Artwork How-To | Libbey Court
Find out how to collect unique digital artwork created by artists Osinachi and Yusuf Lateef for the Sankofa Carnival, TMA’s temporary, digital art experience.

11 a.m.-5 p.m. | Art Activities | Family Center
Try out our hands-on art activities designed to help honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Space is limited. Please register online at toledomuseum.org or in person at any visitor experience desk.

Noon-1 p.m. | A Conversation with Bishop Culp | Little Theater
Rhonda Sewell, the TMA director of belonging and community engagement, will open the program by reading TMA’s land acknowledgment statement. Then, WTVG-13 news reporter Alexis Means will moderate a conversation with Toledo legend Bishop Robert A. Culp, senior advisor counselor and retired lead pastor, First Church of God. He will talk about his trek to the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, his meeting Martin Luther King Jr. and his journey as a civil rights advocate.

Noon-4 p.m. | Studio Activities | Green Room
Make your own mixed-media button using Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement as your inspiration.

1-3 p.m. | Ask Me Docents | New Media Gallery
Learn about artwork in the TMA collection that was created by Black artists, including Elizabeth Catlett, Wangechi Mutu and Kehinde Wiley.

2-4 p.m. | African Art Teaching Collection | Gallery 1
Get up close with touchable African Art objects including a palm wine cup, akua ba doll, mud cloth and Ghanaian mask.

In addition, visitors can experience other exhibitions, including “Beth Lipman: ReGift” in Gallery 18, “Expanding Horizons: The Evolving Character of a Nation” in the New Media Gallery, and “Jordy R. Pomas: Las Curiosas” in the Robert C. and Susan Savage Community Gallery.
