Just as the French painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries were fascinated with evoking images through the manipulation of color, as in pointillism, fauvism, and other visual art movements, the French composers of the same period were similarly occupied. Utilizing the shorter chamber works of Debussy, Manuel, Pierne, and Gaubert, Toledo-based ensemble Sono Novo explores the landscape of groundbreaking orchestral timbre that was the pre-occupation of these French masters. Great Performances is supported in part by the Dorothy MacKenzie Price Fund and Hartmann & Associates.
