Silent Runnings (1972, 89 minutes)
In this film starring Bruce Dern and directed by special effects master Douglas Trumball (2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind,and Blade Runner), Earth is so overdeveloped that plants can no longer survive, so giant greenhouses are launched into orbit carrying samples of the world's dying forests. They become too expensive to maintain, but one committed crew member is determined to save them.
