Civil War Winter Camp

A military band performing while on horseback is the newest addition to the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ annual Civil War Winter Camp taking place Saturday, Oct. 25, at Spiegel Grove.

Civil War Winter Camp is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It focuses on life in a winter camp like those of President Rutherford B. Hayes’ regiment, the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and takes participants inside the camp to see aspects of how soldiers lived during the war. It includes:

  • Performance by the 2ndCavalry Brigade Band, a brass band that plays while mounted on horseback
  • Tours of the winter camp with Civil War reenactors
  • Demonstration by the 5th U.S. Colored Troops
  • Kids’ event
  • Talk on President Hayes’ Civil War service
  • Rifle infantry demonstrations
  • 73rd Regimental Band performance
  • Reenactors portraying Civil War veterans
  • Free Model-T rides by Firelands Timeless Ts. These are being offered because veterans would have driven Model-Ts to their reunions.

Roots Poultry’s food truck and Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor’s root beer stand will sell lunch and snacks. Refreshments are not included with admission.

Camp tours last about 50 minutes and are outdoors. Please dress for the weather. Paid tickets are required for camp tours. Tickets for non-members are $10 ages 13 and older, $7 ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger. Tickets for Hayes Presidential Library & Museums members are $8 for ages 13 and older, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger. All tickets are non-refundable.
