Marisol: A Retrospective
March 2, 2024 to June 2, 2024
The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will explore the life’s work of an artist who helped define the 1960s with “Marisol: A Retrospective,” on view March 2-June 2, 2024. The exhibition, organized by Buffalo AKG Art Museum, will chronicle the full arc of the artist’s practice with 244 works that address several themes, including politics, gender norms and ecological and societal concerns. Her recognizable sculptures and self-portraits will appear alongside lesser-known works, source materials, sketches, studies and personal photographs to offer visitors an insightful look into the artist’s life and working methods and the social climate that influenced her work.

dirtykics - In Order to Live
May 1 to July 14, 2024
Journey through the lens of Toledo artist James "dirtykics" Dickerson. This unique and intimate portrayal of life in Toledo beckons viewers to take a closer look at people's lives through spontaneous encounters and film photography. Each image tells a story of the dynamic stories of the people of Toledo and the unique journeys that life leads them through.

Beth Lipman: ReGift
August 12, 2023 to September 1, 2024
Motivated by histories Lipman discovered in the archives at the TMA, ReGift features a three-quarter life-sized recreation of the parlor in Edward and Florence Libbey’s Old West End house. Using the Libbey’s bookplate as a visual guide (the only known image of their home interior) Lipman filled this architectural space with objects found in the image that she fabricated in white glass.

Africa Unmasked
July 21, 2023 to August 30, 2025
Africa Unmasked commemorates sixty-five years of African art collecting and exhibiting at the Toledo Museum of Art. Featuring sixteen exemplary works, ranging from the oldest to the most recent acquisitions, the display invites viewers to appreciate the permanent collection as both an example of African innovation and as an outgrowth of evolving European-American ideas about African culture.

Expanding Horizons
March 18, 2023 to August 30, 2025
This installation celebrates, complicates, and above all, aims to instill curiosity and inquiry about American art. Expanding Horizons: The Evolving Character of a Nation features more than 80 objects from TMA’s collection, exploring understudied narratives, confronting misconceptions, putting select works in conversation with each other and inviting visitors to share feedback that will help shape future installations going forward.

Ethiopia at the Crossroads
August 17, 2024 to November 10, 2024
Journey through more than 1,700 years of artistic traditions and celebrate rich history and culture with “Ethiopia at the Crossroads,” on view Aug. 17-Nov. 10, 2024 at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA). It is the first major United States exhibition to examine Ethiopian art in a global context and chronicle the country’s artistic traditions and exchanges from their origins to present day.

From Asia to the World
April 20, 2024 to June 29, 2025
From Asia to the World: Ancient to Contemporary Art celebrates more than one hundred years of collecting and exhibiting Asian art at the Toledo Museum of Art, featuring superb examples from the ancient period to the present. Sculptures of Buddhist and Hindu deities embody sophisticated ideas and philosophies, and blue-and white-porcelain, celadon, and enamel ceramics from China, Korea, and Japan highlight trade between Asia, Latin America, and Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Works by contemporary artists engage these histories as well as current political and social conditions.

Generational Echoes
April 6 to July 7, 2024
Generational Echoes: Privilege, Power and the Transmission of Knowledge, an exhibition curated by art students at The University of Toledo (UToledo), explores interpretations and representations of knowledge in visual art, as well as the ways societies share and protect what they have learned. Sixteen UToledo students pursuing degree concentrations in art museum practices and graphic and interactive design conceived and curated Generational Echoes.

In a New Light
March 30, 2024 to June 29, 2025
Works from TMA’s collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art are now on view in the SANAA-designed Glass Pavilion on the museum’s campus . Paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 1870s to the 1920s showcase the spectrum of artistic production in Europe and the United States as well as the importance of Japanese art for Western artists in this period.
