Artsy Exploration
Spend a morning or two taking in the world of larger-than-life visual arts at institutions showcasing global masterpieces and local talent. A must-see is the Toledo Museum of Art, home to the Glass Pavilion and a world-renowned collection, admission always free. TMA is undergoing (and will remain open throughout) a comprehensive reinstallation of its galleries for the first time in 40 years, bringing a more engaging, inclusive and accessible visitor experience. Explore the arts outdoors by strolling the Perrysburg Sculpture Walk for approachable public works amidst the pleasant backdrop of Woodlands Park. Nature lovers will also appreciate Toledo Botanical Garden and Schedel Arboretum & Gardens, which both put the art of Mother Nature on full display through gardens and art installations. The breathtaking Glass City River Wall, the country’s largest mural, transforms the urban waterscape of the Maumee River into an open-air gallery. And always keep an eye out for dynamic public works spearheaded by The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo that help make Toledo an inspiring place to live, work and create.

For a mix of traditional and contemporary pieces, visit 20 North Gallery in the historic Warehouse District. Check out special exhibitions, student work and shop creations at The Portal at the Toledo School for the Arts. Upriver in Uptown Maumee, support more incredible community-focused art at Sunshine Studios, which sells creations by artists of all abilities. Venture to Sylvania to explore Hudson Gallery, housed in a beautifully restored 1800s building, or find local talent and an inviting atmosphere at Fuller Art House. Plan ahead to experience the vibrant energy at Red Bird Sylvania’s First Fridays or see artists capturing the landscape firsthand at their annual Plein Air Festival.
Engaging Performances

For classical art enthusiasts, the Toledo Opera presents powerful productions throughout the season at the historic Valentine Theatre, also home to a diverse lineup of national tours and local performances. The city’s rich musical heritage shines through Live Arts Toledo with the sophisticated sounds of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the captivating dance moves of the Toledo Ballet and the intricate arrangements of the Toledo Jazz Orchestra.

419 Faces | Dean Davis, local artist
When Toledo native Dean Davis lifts his brush, he reveals art’s power to inspire pride and brighten tomorrow. The prolific muralist — best known as lead artist on the Glass City River Wall — and owner of Art Farm and River Gallery Studio believes color can heal.
“The goal is to put as much color on these spaces that don’t have them as possible,” says Davis. “It’s to give people a reason to smile, especially during the winter.” And the impact extends beyond the walls. Through his murals, Davis connects communities, celebrates their roots and sparks renewal across northwest Ohio.
“In the last five years of public art service, I’ve realized how uplifting this can be for these communities,” he says. Over the next five to seven years, Davis plans to create 100 new works across Lucas County. Central to that vision is the River Gallery Project along the Maumee River, which will transform Toledo’s industrial and intrepid past into the world’s largest collection of riverfront open-air art.
When he’s not painting, you’ll find Davis supporting local favorites like Danny’s Café in Rossford, Paddy Joe’s in Oregon and Ye Olde Durty Bird and Toledo Pickle Co. downtown.
