SUMMARY:The Fate of Ophelia and Other Favorites from TMA’s European Collection
DESCRIPTION:Rediscover some of the Toledo Museum of Art’s most captivating European paintings before the galleries close for transformation\, reopening in 2027. Join Dr. Megan Reddicks Pignataro\, Curatorial Research Associate in European Art\, for a lively look at more than five centuries of artistic creativity\, from the everyday to the fantastical\, and everything in between. \nAlong the way\, encounter beloved works by artists such as Peter Paul Rubens and Frans Hals\, and linger on TMA favorites like Blind Man’s Buff and Ophelia. In Arthur Hughes’s Ophelia\, the tragic heroine of Shakespeare’s Hamlet wanders in a dreamlike haze\, gathering flowers that tell her story through their meanings—the willow for sadness\, the daisy for innocence\, the violet for faithfulness. Her beauty and fate\, rendered in luminous color and emotion\, embody the timeless pull of European art that continues to resonate today. \nYou can experience this event on Friday\, December 5 \n3:30 – 4:30 p.m. & 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the Great Gallery \nRegistration for this tour is required. \nGuests are invited to meet in the Great Gallery (Gallery 36) and check in five minutes before the tour begins. \nIf you need accommodations\, assistance\, or appropriate modifications to fully participate in this event\, please let the museum know by contacting Access Initiatives at access@toledomuseum.org.\n\nPlease note that while the museum  endeavors to provide everyone with a positive visitor experience\, last-minute requests may not be accommodated; we ask for requests to be made at a minimum\, three days prior to the event

SUMMARY:50th Anniversary Edmund Fitzgerald Tribute
DESCRIPTION:The SS Edmund Fitzgerald\, one of the largest and most famous freighters to sail the Great Lakes\, sank during a fierce storm on Lake Superior on November 10\, 1975\, taking the lives of all 29 crew members aboard. Its mysterious sinking remains one of the Great Lakes’ most captivating stories\, elevated even further by the popular 1976 Gordon Lightfoot song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald“. The ship was often called the “Toledo Express” because the majority of the crew and the captain resided in Toledo—making it a significant Great Lakes connection directly related to our hometown. \nNow\, 50 years later\, the National Museum of the Great Lakes plans to honor the ship and crew’s memory with a weekend of unforgettable events\, special performances\, and meaningful reflections as well as numerous activities in the months leading up to the anniversary. \nFor a full schedule of unforgettable events\, special performances\, and meaningful reflections visit the National Museum of the Great Lakes website.
